I took off petal after petal...

The following poem I found on a Brian McLaren blog post.  Among many positive insights and experiences, a reader of his books also found a deep grief in re-examining the Christianity that she grew up with.  But in this grief there she also found a new word of hope, very accurately expressed in the following poem.  I agree with this reader, and it resonates with my deconstructionist experience in this "following Jesus" thing, so I wanted to share it.
I took off petal after petal, as if you were a rose,
in order to see your soul,
and I didn't see it.

However- everything around-
horizons of fields and oceans-
everything, even what was infinite,
was filled with a perfume,
immense and living.
